Key findings

9 out of 10 individual traders in the equity Futures and Options segment incurred net losses.
On an average, loss makers registered a net trading loss close to ₹50,000.
Over and above the net trading losses incurred, loss makers spent an additional 28% of net trading losses as transaction costs.
Those making net trading profits incurred between 15% and 50% of such profits as transaction costs.

Later SEBI studies

FY 2021-22 to FY 2023-24: 93% of over 1 crore individual F&O traders made losses, averaging about ₹2 lakh per trader including transaction costs. Aggregate losses exceeded ₹1.8 lakh crore.
FY 2024-25: over 91% of individual traders in equity derivatives made losses, and their net losses rose to about ₹1.06 lakh crore.

Investor guidelines

Simple safeguards every trader should follow, in line with SEBI's investor awareness advice.

Trade only through registered intermediaries

Deal only with SEBI-registered stock brokers and depository participants. Verify registration on sebi.gov.in before opening an account.

Avoid "guaranteed return" offers

No one can guarantee profits in the stock market. Stay away from schemes, tips or groups that promise fixed or assured returns.

Never share your credentials

Do not share your trading password, OTP, PIN or login with anyone, including people claiming to be from your broker.

Check your statements

Review the contract notes, SMS and email alerts from your broker and exchange after every trade. Report any mismatch immediately.

Understand before you trade

Options can lose value quickly due to time decay and volatility. Understand margin, leverage and expiry before taking a position.

Know where to complain

Raise complaints first with your broker. If unresolved, use SEBI SCORES at scores.sebi.gov.in or the SMART ODR portal.
